Introducing Sugarboo
Welcome to Burlesque With Paris, where our instructors are the heart and soul of everything we do. Here we would like to introduce you to our amazing instructors and explore why they are so dedicated to teaching the art of burlesque.
We are excited to introduce you to our talented instructor, Sugarboo. As stand-in instructor for Hull Honeys and lead instructor for Sugar Belles, she brings passion, precision, and soulful artistry to every class she teaches. Let’s dive into what makes Sugarboo such a powerful presence in the world of Burlesque With Paris.
Hello, my name is Lisa, I’m 52 years old, and dance has always been a part of my life. From being a child, I was always dancing, and as the years passed, I realised just how much I missed it. I knew I wanted to return to doing something I truly loved.
On the 13th of September, nearly eight years ago, I joined Hull Honeys on their opening night with Burlesque With Paris, and I have been here ever since.
What started as a way to reconnect with dance quickly became so much more. Burlesque brought joy back into my life, gave me a renewed sense of confidence, and reminded me that it is never too late to embrace what you love. Stepping into class each week gave me something that was just for me, a space to express myself, move freely, and feel empowered.
Over the years, my confidence has continued to grow, both on and off the stage. Being part of Hull Honeys has been an incredible journey, and it has become such an important part of my life.
That is why becoming an instructor felt like the perfect next step. I want to help others rediscover their passions, build their confidence, and realise that age is never a barrier to shining brightly. I am so excited to continue this journey and support others as they begin theirs.
Why did you become a Burlesque With Paris instructor? What is your favourite thing about being an instructor?
I love working with such a lovely community of women. We have so much fun and laughter, and I have made some wonderful friendships. It has been amazing to pass on my skills and watch confidence and self-esteem grow from those first nervous classes to stepping out onto the stage to perform.
How do you think burlesque helps boost a body positive image?
Routines are broken down into small, accessible steps, making them achievable for everyone. Dances are taught over six weeks, so there is no pressure to remember everything at once. Dress up night gives everyone the chance to express their creativity and personality in a supportive environment.
What is it about burlesque that you love so much?
I love learning new skills, using different props, and challenging myself with new routines. Performing on stage, both in a group and as a solo performer, has pushed me in the best possible way.
Do you have any favourite burlesque performers?
There are too many to choose from, but from the past I would say Sally Rand and Josephine Baker.
Do you feel that burlesque has impacted your life in any significant way?
It has given me time that is just for me. It has allowed me to explore my creativity, build lasting friendships, and share my love of dance with others.
When was the best or most empowering moment for you in burlesque? Favourite moment?
Performing solo on stage. Having the confidence to step out there and share my performance was an incredible achievement.
What is your motto in life?
It is what it is.
Why did you choose your name and where did it come from?
It comes from a Beyoncé song, Sugarboo, Sugarboo.
If you could give one piece of advice to anyone taking up a burlesque class, what would it be?
Just give it a go. You will be welcomed by a group of friendly, like-minded women who share a love of dance. The first step is the hardest. After that, there will be no stopping you.
