Why We Do Girls On Film
At the end of every burlesque term, there is a special kind of buzz in the air. Rhinestones are carefully packed, lashes are applied with intention, and students step fully into their alter egos not only on stage, but on screen.
Welcome to Girls On Film. Our signature end-of-term filming day. A moment where performance, creativity, and personal transformation meet in front of the camera.
But why do we do Girls On Film? Why not head straight to stage shows?
Because burlesque is about more than performance alone. It is about self-expression, confidence, embodiment, and learning to be seen. Girls On Film is not simply about being filmed. It is about honouring the journey from rehearsal to radiance.
Celebrating Every Student’s Progress
Every burlesque journey begins somewhere. Often nervous. Sometimes shy. Frequently unsure of how a character will unfold.
Over the course of a term, students learn far more than choreography. They build confidence. They develop presence. They begin to inhabit who they want to be on stage.
Girls On Film is our way of celebrating that growth. It acknowledges that every shimmy, strut, and hip swing was earned. Whether it is a student’s very first costume or their fifth filmed routine, this day becomes a highlight reel of courage, commitment, and personal evolution.
Bringing Characters to Life on Camera
Character work sits at the heart of burlesque. Each student creates a persona that may be fierce, flirtatious, comedic, dramatic, or mysterious.
Girls On Film offers the perfect space to explore that character fully.
On stage, you get one chance. On camera, you get room to play.
Filming allows students to experiment with expression, angles, and intention. They can lean into glamour, humour, or drama and truly see their burlesque persona come alive. For many, this moment sparks new creative confidence that carries into future performances.
Building Confidence Before the Stage
Stepping under stage lights in heels, corsets, or feathers can feel daunting, even for experienced performers.
Girls On Film acts as a powerful stepping stone. It offers performance within a supportive, familiar environment where students can settle into their movement, costume, and presence without the pressure of a live audience.
Learning to be seen is a skill. Filming helps students practise that skill with confidence and care.
The more comfortable someone becomes in front of the camera, the more naturally they command attention when the stage lights come on.
Rehearsing in Full Costume
Costume is part of the magic of burlesque and part of the challenge.
Dancing in fringe, gloves, corsets, or heels feels very different from dancing in leggings. Girls On Film gives students the opportunity to perform their routine fully styled, with accessories, makeup, and footwear exactly as intended.
This dress rehearsal is invaluable. It allows performers to discover what works, what needs adjusting, and what makes them feel most powerful. And they leave with something tangible, filmed footage they can treasure, share, or use as a portfolio piece.
Capturing the Journey
Burlesque is not just about the destination. It is about the process.
From the first tentative movements in class to the final confident pose on camera, Girls On Film captures a moment where confidence has grown, characters have emerged, and boundaries have been gently and joyfully pushed.
When students watch their footage back, they often see themselves differently. Stronger. More radiant. More in control than they realised.
We believe everyone deserves to see themselves shine.
A Celebration of Confidence
Girls On Film is more than an event. It is a celebration of everything we believe in. Creativity. Courage. Self-expression. Joy.
It bridges the space between learning and owning it. Between the studio and the stage. For new students, it is a gentle and exciting introduction to performance. For experienced performers, it is a space to refine, explore, and shine.
For everyone, it is a reminder that burlesque is about being unapologetically yourself, with glitter.
